STERN KEEL /FRAME - Part 1

This first animation simply shows the stripping away of the stern's skin. The last frame is the stern framework exposed, as seen from the side. Labels point to the major members of the frame and base.

The frames are notched, as is the keel. They fit together. You will notice a dark vertical line about 3/4 of the way back on the baseboard (just to the right of the arrowhead). This line marks how deep into the baseboard the notch for the keel goes.

The stern block is carved from a solid piece of balsa. The rough shape is done first. Actual finishing of it is done after the skin is in place, so that the skin and the block can be sanded into proper shape together. It makes for a clean and unbroken line down the side of the hull.

Also notice the propshaft housing. It is square, and fits into the keel. Both are 1/4" thick. How it fits is covered in the 3rd part of this series.
